Isla del Sol (Sun Island) is situated on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca with regular boat rides to the town of Copacabana. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world located at an altitude of 3810 meters above seal level, and Sun Island is one of its largest and most enigmatic islands.
There are over 80 ruins on the island, most of which date back to the Inca period during 15th century AD. Many hills on the island contain agricultural terraces, which adapt steep and rocky terrain to agriculture. In the religion of the Incas, Lake Titicaca was believed to be the birthplace of the Sun god, as well as the place from which the founders of the Inca Empire, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, emerged.
