The tour continues to the San Francisco Colonial Church (museum not included) and Plaza Murillo where the Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the National Congress buildings are located. After this, visit the charming, cobble-stoned street of Jaen, one of the last colonial streets of downtown La Paz, and home to a range of museums, shops, bars and restaurants. Transfer to Plaza España to take the Yellow and Green Lines of the city’s sky lift towards the southern area of the city. Here you will enjoy panoramic views of the residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and La Florida.

Finally, visit Moon Valley, with an amazing display of rock erosion patterns like something from out of this world. Enjoy the small gallery of celebrated local potter, Mario Sarabia, located in the area (duration: 4 hours). Return to your hotel.

Transfer to Copacabana and Tour:
Pick up from the lobby of your hotel. Transport to Copacabana (duration: 4 – 4 ½ hours, altitude: 3,840m / 12,595ft). Lunch at the outdoor terrace of the Rosario Hotel, overlooking Lake Titicaca.

Start your tour by visiting the Basilica, a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. Inside is the Shrine de la Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved in the 15th century believed to be responsible for countless miracles. Legend says that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

Next, you may walk the 12 Stations of the Cross (optional), which devout Catholics visit throughout the Easter season of Lent. It is a great walk (duration: 1 ½ hours) as it will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of nearby islands. The views of Lake Titicaca on the way up, and at the summit, are worth the uphill walking. It is worth noting that in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you’ll also find Yatiris (masters) performing spiritual cleansings called “challas” or coca leaf readings, all part of the Aymara culture.

Transfer to Sun Island:
After your tour of Copacabana, you will be transferred by boat to the Port of Pilkokaina in the southern part of Sun Island on Lake Titicaca–legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire–where you will be welcomed by the La Estancia Eco-Lodge staff. The lodge is situated at the top of the island and requires a smooth uphill walk with amazing views of the lake and a visit to the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way, (duration: 1- 1 ½ hours). From the lodge, behold an amazing sunset.Evening free.

Overnight at La Estancia Eco-Lodge.

Ceremonies dedicated to water and insemination of earth took place here. After a short trek with wonderful panoramic views of Lake Titicaca, take a boat back to Copacabana (duration: 1 hour) to then be transferred to Tiwanaku (duration: 3 – 4 hours).

Half Day Tiwanaku Ruins and Transfer to La Paz:
After lunch, visit the Spiritual and Political Centre of the Tiwanaku Culture, which includes beautiful monumental stone buildings that survive in the protected archaeological zones. See the Kalasasaya Temple (Sun), the legendary Sun Gate, the Semi-subterranean temple (Earth), the Akapana Pyramid, and the Puma Punku ceremonial center. Visit the local museums and enjoy an impressive collection of objects and tools of ancient civilizations, in addition to monumental monoliths (duration: 1 ½ – 2 hours). La Paz

Founded in 1548 by Spanish conquistadors, Nuestra Señora de La Paz, commonly known as La Paz, is Bolivia’s third most-populous city, the seat of the country’s government and the capital of the La Paz Department. It is located on the western side of Bolivia, nestled between the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level. La Paz is a city that showcases tradition with flair.

(Spanish: Tiahuanaco or Tiahuanacu) is a Pre-Columbian archaeological site in western Bolivia. The city of Tiwanaku, capital of a powerful pre-Hispanic empire that dominated a large area of the southern Andes and beyond, reached its apogee between 500 and 900 AD. Its monumental remains testify to the cultural and political significance of this civilization, which is distinct from any of the other pre-Hispanic empires of the Americas.

Sun Island

Isla del Sol (Sun Island) is an island in the southern part of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. Lake Titicaca is said to be the birthplace of the Sun god and other pre-columbian gods, as well as the place from where Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, founders of the Inca Empire, emerged.

There are over 80 ruins on Sun Island. Most of these date to the Inca period during the 15th century AD. Many hills on the island contain agricultural terraces, which adapt steep and rocky terrain to agriculture. Among the ruins on the island are the Sacred Rock, a labyrinth-like building called Chinkana, Kasa Pata, and Pilco Kaima.

Uyuni Salt Flats

The Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt desert at nearly 12,000 square kilometers (7,456 sq mi), and is at an elevation of 3,656 meters (11,995 ft). The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. It is covered by a few meters of salt crust, and boasts an extraordinary flatness.  The Salar serves as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano and is a major breeding ground for several species of pink flamingos. It is also a photographer’s paradise for its natural flatness and beautiful landscape.

FOR THE HIGHLANDS (La Paz, Tiwanaku, Copacabana, Lake Titicaca, and Uyuni):

  • Upon arrival in La Paz, we recommend you rest for at least 3 hours; do not eat much, as digesting food might be a bit slow during your first day due to the altitude.  Also, you can drink coca tea (except those who suffer from high blood pressure and heart problems).
  • Wear comfortable footwear and clothes (dress in layers).
  • Drink water, wear sunglasses, sunscreen and sun cap.
  • Bring moisturizing cream and a small backpack for excursions.
  • Do not forget a camera or videocamera to capture the amazing places you’ll visit.
  • We recommend bringing abundant contact lens solution or an additional pair of glasses.
