Founded in 1548 by Spanish conquistadors, La Paz is Bolivia’s third most-populous city, the seat of the country’s government and the capital of the La Paz Department. It is located on the western side of Bolivia, nestled between the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level. It also has the distinction of being the highest capital in the world.

Tiwanaku (Spanish: Tiahuanaco or Tiahuanacu) is a Pre-Columbian archaeological site in western Bolivia. The city of Tiwanaku, capital of a powerful pre-Hispanic empire that dominated a large area of the southern Andes and beyond, reached its apogee between 500 and 900 AD. Its monumental remains testify to the cultural and political significance of this civilization, which is distinct from any of the other pre-Hispanic empires of the Americas.

Isla del Sol (Sun Island) is an island in the southern part of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. Lake Titicaca is said to be the birthplace of the Sun god and other pre-columbian gods, as well as the place from where Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, founders of the Inca Empire, emerged.

There are over 80 ruins on Sun Island. Most of these date to the Inca period during the 15th century AD. Many hills on the island contain agricultural terraces, which adapt steep and rocky terrain to agriculture. Among the ruins on the island are the Sacred Rock, a labyrinth-like building called Chinkana, Kasa Pata, and Pilco Kaina.

The Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt desert at nearly 12,000 square kilometers (7,456 sq mi), and sits at an elevation of 3,656 meters (11,995 ft). The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. It is covered by a few meters of salt crust, which boasts an extraordinary flatness. The Salar serves as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano and is a major breeding ground for several species of pink flamingos. It is also a photographer’s paradise for its natural flatness and beautiful landscape.

The Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve is situated in the far southwestern region of Bolivia, and it is the country’s most visited protected area. Located at an altitude between 4,200 m (13,800 ft) and 5,400 m (17,700 ft), it extends over an area of 714,745 hectares (1,766,170 acres) and includes the Laguna Colorada National Wildlife Sanctuary.

The reserve is primarily for the protection of birds that inhabit its different lagoons. The reserve protects part of the Central Andean dry puna (oligothermic) ecoregion. Its major attractions are erupting volcanoes, hot springs, geysers, lakes, fumaroles, mountains and its three endemic species of flamingos.

Morning transfer from the Airport:
International flight Lima or Cusco – La Paz (booked on your own). Private transport WITH TRANSFER PERSON from the airport to your hotel in La Paz.

City Tour La Paz and Moon Valley Half Day:
Pick up from the lobby of your hotel to visit the highlights of the city of La Paz. These include the famous Witch Doctor’s Market (where you can find herbs, folk remedies and fascinating ingredients used in Aymara rituals), and the typical handicrafts market of Sagarnaga Street.

Your Bolivia Vacation continues to the San Francisco Colonial Church (Museum not included) and Plaza Murillo where the Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the National Congress buildings are located. After this you will visit the charming, cobble-stoned street of Jaen, one of the last colonial streets of downtown La Paz, and home to a range of museums, shops, bars and restaurants. You will then be transferred to Plaza España to take the Yellow and Green Lines of the city’s sky lift towards the southern area of the city. Here you will enjoy panoramic views of the residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and La Florida.

Finally, the tour ends with a fascinating visit to Moon Valley, an amazing display of rock erosion patterns like something from out of this world. You will also have the opportunity to visit and enjoy the small gallery of celebrated local potter, Mario Sarabia (duration: 4 hours). Return to your hotel.

Evening free.

Transfer to Copacabana and Tour:
Pick up from the lobby of your hotel. Transport to Copacabana (duration: 4 – 4 ½ hours, altitude: 3,840m / 12,595ft). At your arrival, you will have lunch at the outdoor terrace of the Rosario Hotel, overlooking Lake Titicaca.

Start your tour by visiting the Basilica, a stark, white, Moorish-looking building decorated with Portuguese-style blue tiles and rounded domes. Inside is the Shrine de la Virgen de Copacabana — a statue carved in the 15th century which is said to be responsible for countless miracles. People believe that if she’s removed, Lake Titicaca will rise in rebellion and flood the town.

We recommend you walk the 12 Stations of the Cross (optional), which devout Catholics visit throughout the Easter. It is a great walk (duration: 1 ½ hours) as it will help you understand the layout of the town and the position of nearby islands. The views of Lake Titicaca on the way up, and at the summit, are worth the uphill walk. It is worth noting that in contrast to the strong Catholic influences found in Copacabana, you’ll also find Yatiris (Aymara masters) performing spiritual cleansings called “challas” or coca leaf readings.

Boat Transfer to Sun Island:
After your tour of Copacabana, transfer by boat to the Port of Pilkokaina in the southern part of Sun Island on Lake Titicaca–legendary birthplace of the Inca Empire. The staff of La Estancia Eco-lodge will welcome you at your arrival. The lodge is situated at the top of the island and requires a smooth walk uphill. Enjoy amazing views of the lake and visit the Inca ruins of Pilkokaina Palace along the way, (duration: 1- 1 ½ hours). From the lodge, behold an amazing sunset.

Evening free.

After a short trek with wonderful panoramic views of Lake Titicaca, you will take a boat back to Copacabana (duration: 1 hour) to then be transferred to Tiwanaku (duration: 3 – 4 hours).

Half Day Tiwanaku Ruins and Transfer to La Paz:
After lunch in Tiwanaku, visit the Spiritual and Political Centre of the Tiwanaku Culture, which includes beautiful monumental stone buildings that survive in the protected archaeological zones. After breakfast, you’ll depart to the Red Lagoon, home to the famous James Flamingos, unique in its species. The lagoon itself is very special as it sometimes turns a deep red color because of the combination of a reddish sediment in its surface, and the pigmentation of a certain type of seaweed at its bottom. You will visit the Sol de Mañana Geysers, an area full of boiling mud lakes and steam pools, and continue on to the Chalviri Lagoon, its hot springs, and Dali’s Valley, named for its resemblance to Dali’s vast desert paintings. Afterwards, you will visit the Green Lagoon, a spectacular brightly green salt lake where you’ll also be able to appreciate the towering Licancabur Volcano as a backdrop.

Road trip to the town of Colchani (20 min. from Uyuni). Arrive at Palacio de Sal Hotel, the first hotel made entirely of salt. We recommend you visit the hotel’s 2nd floor viewpoint and surroundings to appreciate the sky, considered one of the world’s cleanest at this latitude.

Afterwards, you will enjoy a unique picnic experience in the middle of the salt flats. Take advantage of the desert’s extraordinary flatness to play with proportion and perspective in your photographs.

Please note that Incahuasi Island will not be visited during the rainy season.

After lunch, travel to Pucara Ayque at the base of the Tunupa volcano to explore the Pre-Columbian ruins and mummies of the place.
