Full Day Uyuni Salt Flats:
Early morning pick-up WITH DRIVER from the Uyuni airport. Stop at TIKA restaurant at the Jardines de Uyuni hotel for a short break as all tours begin at 10:00am. Mid-morning departure on route to the amazing Uyuni Salt Flats, the world’s largest salt desert. Visit the train cemetery, and take playful and artistic pictures on board old 19th and 20th century steam locomotives. Next, visit the town of Colchani (20 min. from Uyuni) to learn the artisanal salt extraction process from local artisans. Also, see piles of extracted salt and the “ojos del salar” or mineralized water springs bursting from the salt flat.

Make your way to Incahuasi Island, located in the middle of the Uyuni Salt Flats, an oasis with a unique and isolated ecosystem where giant cacti thrive (up to 10m. or 32ft. high). Afterwards, enjoy a unique picnic experience, as lunch will be served in the middle of the salt desert. Use this time to take fun pictures, using the extraordinary flatness of the desert to play with proportion and perspective.

After lunch travel to Pucara Ayque at the base of the Tunupa volcano to explore the Pre-Columbian ruins and mummies found there. After witnessing an amazing sunset on the salt flat, return to Uyuni or Colchani where you will be transferred to your hotel in Colchani – Uyuni.

Please note that Incahuasi Island will not be visited during the rainy season.

FOR THE HIGHLANDS (La Paz, Tiwanaku, and Uyuni):

  • Upon arrival in La Paz, we recommend you rest for at least 3 hours; do not eat much, as digesting food might be a bit slow during your first day due to the altitude.  Also, you can drink coca tea (except those who suffer from high blood pressure and heart problems).
  • Wear comfortable footwear and clothes.
  • Drink water, wear sunglasses, sunscreen and sun cap.
  • Bring moisturizing cream and a small backpack for excursions.
  • Do not forget a camera or videocamera to capture the amazing places you’ll visit.
  • We recommend bringing abundant contact lens solution or an additional pair of glasses.

The Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt desert at nearly 12,000 square kilometers (7,456 sq mi). It is located in southwest Bolivia, and is at an elevation of 3,656 meters absl (11,995 ft). The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. It is covered by a few meters of salt crust, and possesses an extraordinary flatness. For example, the average altitude varies within one meter over the entire area of the Salar.

In addition, the Uyuni Salt Flats serve as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano. They are also a major breeding ground for several species of pink flamingos. Finally, and what’s interesting for travelers, is that the Salar is a perfect spot for pictures because of its natural flatness and beautiful landscape.
